Fonti del Clitunno

Le Fonti del Clittunno are a series of freshwater springs located in the Clitunno River Valley, between Spoleto and Foligno. This natural site is known for its beauty and for being celebrated by poets and artists since ancient times. The waters of Clitunno were so abundant as to form a large navigable river that the ancient Romans used to travel to the capital of the empire.

These springs were considered sacred and constituted places of worship dedicated to the god Jupiter Clitunno, who personified the river of the same name. In honor of this divinity, several temples were erected along its banks, testifying to the devotion and religious importance attributed to these waters by ancient Roman civilization. The crystal clear waters of the Clitunno, which flow from different springs, create an environment of peace and serenity, surrounded by willow and poplar trees. The Fonti del Clitunno is an ideal place for a pleasant walk or a picnic or just to enjoy its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. The site was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, recognized for its historical, cultural and environmental importance.
